Scientific Services We Offer
At the Altitude Research Center, we bring 30+ years experience to all of our high altitude and hypoxia research projects. We have contract experience with different organizations, including the pharmacological and neutraceutical industry, private contractors, and a broad range of DOD projects. Our staff and collaborators are among the world's best high altitude experts, with a special emphasis on exercise at high altitude. We can design and complete a drug trial for you in our custom high altitude chamber on the Denver campus of the University of Colorado, or in the field at our high altitude locations ranging from 10,000 to 14,000 feet in Colorado. If you need a higher altitude, we have more experience than anyone running a state of the art research program on Mt. McKinley, in Alaska.
We bring two major areas of expertise to bear on all problems and projects related to high altitude clinical research. We are experts in both high altitude medicine and exercise physiology, at high altitude. We have access to clinical HAPE populations, and database of former HAPE patients. We have the ability to create acute mountain sickness routinely in our high altitude chamber, and to conduct state of the art exercise studies. Our measurement capabilities include a full array of non-invasive measurements of oxygen transport, including Doppler measurements of brain blood flow and cardiac output, near infrared spectroscopy measurements of brain oxygenation, pulse oximetry for systemic oxygenation. plus all standard measurements of exercise capacity. In comparison with other sites and teams, we are the authors of the most highly cited medical journal review on high altitude medicine and many primary, and often copied, medical textbook reviews of high altitude medicine and physiology (see MWEE here). These are just a small sample of our many high altitude publications (see list here).
High altitude presents a complex series of medical and physiological challenges. If your clinical study needs demand experts outside our areas of specialty, we are in a position to bring in collaborators from the U.S. and abroad in almost every field touched by high altitude and hypoxia. We run the biannual International Hypoxia Symposia, and through that meeting where cutting edge hypoxia research is presented and discussed, we have an extensive network of contacts with the best hypoxia scientists. These resources could also be brought to bear on solving your clinical testing needs.
Our years of experience translate for the customer into our ability to quickly turn your clinical testing needs into an IRB approved protocol, and to get the testing rapidly completed in our laboratory or field locations. We also have procedures in place for rapid turn-around of clinical testing outcome data and report writing.
In addition to conducting clinical trials, our facilities and expertise are available to consult on equipment and animal testing.
We look forward to discussing with you your clinical testing needs as they relate to hypoxia and high altitude. Please contact Dr. Robert Roach, ARC's Research Director, at 303.724.1770 or by email at
